Message from the City Manager – January 2023

By Stan Morris, City Manager

(Monday, January 2, 2023) – As 2023 begins, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We look forward to another prosperous year in Sunny Isles Beach. 2022 concluded with elections for Mayor and two Commission seats. I want to congratulate Mayor Larisa Svechin, Vice Mayor Jeniffer Viscarra, and Commissioner Alex Lama on their successful campaigns. They are ready to hit the ground running and expand on all the progress we made last year.

There are many moving parts that must work together for an election to succeed. General and special elections are managed as a cooperative effort between the City Clerk’s Office and the Miami-Dade County Elections Department, with our City Clerk, Mauricio Betancur, serving as the supervisor of elections for city elections. Both offices share the common goal of ensuring that all elections are conducted in a fair, transparent, and efficient manner.

The election process begins with the City Clerk’s office qualifying candidates who wish to run for office. They provide each candidate with the required forms, deadlines, and general information needed for their campaigns. The Clerk’s office also publishes and distributes public notices to keep our residents informed during the election cycle.

Fair and transparent elections are two of the pillars of our democracy. Voting is a fundamental right that makes our community and our country better. Exercising your right to vote is an important way to preserve the integrity of the democratic process. On behalf of the City Commission and the employees of the City of Sunny Isles Beach, thank you to everyone who made their vote count last year.

We celebrate this past year of successes while we are excited for what is to come in Sunny Isles Beach this new year.
